One of the Most Common Questions Veterans Ask Us
When veterans contact Fredericton Family Chiropractic about accessing chiropractic care through Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), one of the first questions is almost always the same: do I need a referral from my doctor? The answer is not as simple as yes or no — it depends on where you are in the VAC process and what type of benefits you are accessing. This post explains the different scenarios so you know exactly what steps to take.
If You Already Have an Approved Disability Condition
If VAC has already recognized a musculoskeletal condition as related to your service — for example, chronic low back pain, cervical disc disease, or a knee injury — and you have an active disability pension or disability award for that condition, you generally do not need a physician referral to begin chiropractic care. In this scenario, your chiropractor can request a Treatment Authorization directly from VAC on your behalf. At Fredericton Family Chiropractic, we routinely initiate this process for veterans. We submit the authorization request, provide the clinical rationale, and communicate directly with VAC so that you do not have to navigate the bureaucracy on your own.
If You Are Applying for a New Condition or First-Time Benefits
If you have not yet had a condition recognized by VAC, the process is different. In this case, having documentation from your physician can be very helpful. A letter from your family doctor or a specialist that links your musculoskeletal complaint to your military or RCMP service strengthens your application. While your physician’s letter is not technically a “referral” for chiropractic in the traditional sense, it serves as supporting medical evidence that VAC considers when deciding whether to approve your claim and authorize treatment. We recommend that veterans in this situation speak with their doctor about documenting the connection between their symptoms and their service history.
The Role of Your VAC Case Manager
Your VAC case manager plays an important role in determining what treatments are authorized. If you have been assigned a case manager, they can facilitate the approval of chiropractic care as part of your treatment plan. If you are unsure whether you have a case manager or how to contact them, the VAC general inquiry line (1-866-522-2122) can help connect you with the right person. We also find that in many cases, we can help veterans navigate the initial steps by contacting VAC directly on their behalf to determine what authorizations are already in place or what additional documentation may be needed.
The Rehabilitation Program: A Different Pathway
Veterans enrolled in the VAC Rehabilitation Program may access chiropractic care under their medical rehabilitation benefits. This program is designed for veterans who need treatment to address barriers to their health, independence, or ability to work. If you are enrolled in or applying for the Rehabilitation Program, chiropractic care may be included in your individualized rehabilitation plan. In this pathway, your case manager typically coordinates the treatment authorization, and a physician referral may or may not be required depending on your specific plan.
What About RCMP Members?
RCMP members and veterans access VAC benefits through a similar but not identical process. RCMP members with service-related conditions can apply for disability benefits and treatment coverage through VAC. The referral requirements for RCMP members generally mirror those for CAF veterans, though there can be administrative differences in how claims are processed. If you are a current or former RCMP member, we can help you determine the specific steps required for your situation.
Practical Advice: What We Recommend
Based on our experience working with dozens of veterans and RCMP members in the Fredericton area, here is what we suggest. If you already have an approved condition with VAC, call our clinic and we will initiate the treatment authorization process for you — no physician referral needed in most cases. If you are new to the VAC system and have not yet had a condition recognized, start by speaking with your family doctor about documenting your service-related health issues, and contact VAC to begin an application. If you are unsure of your status, call us at (506) 472-7000 and we will help you figure out where you stand. We have walked many veterans through this process and are happy to do the same for you.
Do Not Let Paperwork Stand Between You and Treatment
The referral question stops too many veterans from seeking care. Some assume they need a doctor’s note and give up when they cannot get a timely appointment. Others are unsure if they qualify and never make the call. The reality is that accessing DVA chiropractic benefits is often more straightforward than veterans expect, especially when you have a clinic that understands the system. Contact Fredericton Family Chiropractic at (506) 472-7000 to discuss your eligibility. We serve veterans throughout Fredericton, Oromocto, CFB Gagetown, New Maryland, and the surrounding area.
