What Conditions Does DVA Cover for Chiropractic Treatment?

Veterans Affairs Canada Covers More Than You Might Think

Many veterans assume that DVA chiropractic coverage is limited to simple back pain. In reality, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) recognizes chiropractic treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions — as long as the condition is connected to your military or RCMP service. At Fredericton Family Chiropractic, we treat veterans with a broad spectrum of service-related conditions, and we work with VAC to ensure your treatment is properly authorized and covered.

Spinal Conditions

The most commonly covered conditions involve the spine. Chronic low back pain is the single most prevalent musculoskeletal complaint among Canadian veterans. A 2018 study published in Chronic Diseases and Injuries in Canada found that musculoskeletal conditions affect a substantial proportion of the veteran population, with lumbar spine disorders leading the list. VAC covers chiropractic care for conditions including lumbar disc herniation and degenerative disc disease, cervical spine pain and disc pathology, thoracic spine dysfunction, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, and spinal stenosis symptoms. Many of these conditions develop after years of carrying heavy equipment, performing physically demanding duties, or sustaining acute injuries during training or operations.

Neck Injuries and Cervical Conditions

Neck pain is extremely common among veterans, particularly those who have served in roles involving prolonged helmet use, vehicle vibration, or heavy equipment carried on the shoulders and upper body. Cervical disc degeneration, facet joint irritation, and chronic neck stiffness are frequently recognized by VAC as service-related conditions. Chiropractic treatment for cervical conditions typically includes spinal adjustments, mobilization, soft tissue therapy, and rehabilitative exercises — all of which are covered under approved treatment authorizations.

Joint and Extremity Conditions

VAC chiropractic coverage is not limited to the spine. Conditions affecting the peripheral joints may also be covered when they are linked to service. These include shoulder impingement and rotator cuff injuries (common in infantry and combat arms trades), knee pain and patellofemoral disorders (prevalent among veterans with extensive marching, running, or parachuting history), hip pain and bursitis, elbow and wrist conditions including lateral epicondylitis, and ankle instability from repeated sprains. At our Fredericton clinic, we assess and treat the full musculoskeletal system, not just the spine. If your joint condition is service-related and recognized by VAC, chiropractic treatment is a covered option.

Headaches Related to Cervical Dysfunction

Cervicogenic headaches — headaches that originate from problems in the neck — are a common complaint among veterans, particularly those with cervical spine injuries or chronic neck tension. Research published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics has demonstrated that spinal manipulation is an effective treatment for cervicogenic headaches. If your headaches are linked to a service-related neck condition, chiropractic treatment for those headaches may be covered under your existing VAC authorization.

Conditions Related to Specific Service Duties

Certain military occupations carry specific musculoskeletal risks that VAC recognizes. Armoured vehicle crew members frequently develop chronic spinal conditions from prolonged exposure to whole-body vibration and confined seating. Infantry soldiers are at elevated risk for lower extremity and spinal injuries from load carriage, which research has shown can place forces on the spine equivalent to 45 to 60 percent of body weight during sustained marches. Engineers and logistics personnel may develop repetitive strain conditions. Pilots and aircrew can experience cervical spine degeneration accelerated by G-forces and helmet weight. Understanding how your specific trade contributed to your condition can strengthen both your VAC claim and your treatment plan.

What If Your Condition Is Not Yet Recognized by VAC?

If you have a musculoskeletal condition that you believe is related to your service but has not yet been formally recognized by VAC, you still have options. The first step is to apply for a disability benefit through VAC. This involves submitting medical evidence — including clinical records, diagnostic imaging, and supporting statements from healthcare providers — that demonstrates the link between your condition and your service. At Fredericton Family Chiropractic, we can provide clinical documentation to support your application, including detailed assessment findings and our clinical opinion on the relationship between your symptoms and the physical demands of your military service.
