Neck Pain in Fredericton: What’s Causing It and How We Can Help

If your neck is stiff, sore, or limiting how you move through your day, you are not alone. Neck pain is one of the most common reasons people visit our clinic — and one of the conditions that responds best to the right treatment.

At Fredericton Family Chiropractic, Dr. Scott Brayall and the team treat neck pain every day. Whether yours developed gradually from desk work, came on after an accident, or has been lingering for months without a clear explanation, we can help you figure out what is driving it and build a plan to get it resolved.

This guide covers the basics — why neck pain develops, what is happening inside your cervical spine, and how we approach treatment. For more detailed information, explore our in-depth guides linked below.

Why Neck Pain Is So Common

The neck has a tough job. It supports the weight of your head — roughly 10 to 12 pounds — while allowing you to look up, down, and side to side throughout the day. That combination of mobility and constant load makes it one of the most vulnerable areas in the body.

In Fredericton, we see neck pain develop from a few common patterns:

Desk and screen work — Government employees, professionals, and remote workers who spend hours at a computer often develop gradual neck stiffness and tension from sustained posture.

Student life — Students at UNB and STU spend long hours studying, on laptops, and looking down at phones. Over time, this loads the neck in ways it was not designed to handle.

Motor vehicle accidents — Even a low-speed collision can cause whiplash and neck injuries that may not show up for days after the crash.

Military service — Veterans and active personnel from CFB Gagetown frequently develop chronic neck problems from years of wearing heavy gear, helmets, and enduring physical training.

Sleep and stress — Poor sleeping positions and chronic stress are underrated contributors. Many people wake up with neck pain that seems to come out of nowhere.

The good news is that most neck pain is mechanical — meaning it involves the joints, muscles, or discs of the cervical spine rather than something more serious. And mechanical neck pain responds well to targeted chiropractic care.

Understanding Your Neck — What’s Going On In There

Your cervical spine is made up of seven vertebrae (C1 through C7) stacked in a flexible column. Between most of them sit intervertebral discs that absorb shock and allow smooth movement. Behind each vertebra are small facet joints that control and guide motion. Running through the center is the spinal cord, with nerves exiting at each level and traveling to the shoulders, arms, and hands.

Here is why that matters when something goes wrong:

Facet joint irritation is one of the most common causes of neck pain we see. When these small joints become stiff or inflamed — often from sustained posture or repetitive strain — they create localized pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. This is one of the key areas where chiropractic adjustments are most effective.

Disc problems develop when the tough outer ring of a disc weakens and the softer inner material pushes outward. This can irritate nearby nerves and cause pain that radiates into the shoulder, arm, or hand — sometimes with tingling or numbness. This is commonly called a disc herniation.

Nerve irritation (cervical radiculopathy) can produce burning or shooting pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arm and hand. It is usually caused by disc material or joint swelling pressing on a nerve root as it exits the spine.

Muscle tension and strain in the muscles and ligaments supporting the neck is extremely common, especially with modern screen habits. Chronic tension can create a cycle of tightness, stiffness, and pain that feeds on itself if not addressed.

How We Treat Neck Pain at Fredericton Family Chiropractic

Our approach starts with a thorough assessment. Dr. Brayall evaluates your posture, range of motion, joint function, and neurological status to determine exactly what is causing your pain — not just where it hurts, but why.

From there, treatment is tailored to your specific situation and may include:

Chiropractic adjustments — Restoring normal motion to stiff cervical joints. This is the most effective treatment for mechanical neck pain and is supported by strong clinical evidence (Bronfort et al., 2010; Hurwitz et al., 2008).

Soft tissue therapy — Manual release of tight muscles, trigger points, and fascial restrictions in the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

Instrument-assisted techniques — Dr. Brayall uses the Activator and Arthrostim for patients who prefer a gentler approach or when specific precision is needed.

Postural assessment and coaching — Because posture is often the primary driver of neck pain, we look at your daily habits, workstation setup, and movement patterns.

Therapeutic exercise — Targeted stretches and strengthening exercises designed to support your recovery and prevent recurrence.

Massage therapy — Our registered massage therapists work alongside the chiropractic team to address chronic muscle tension and support your treatment plan.

Neck Pain and Headaches

If your headaches start in the back of your neck, near the base of your skull, or radiate from your shoulders upward, the connection between your neck and your headaches may be more important than you think. Cervicogenic headaches — headaches caused by dysfunction in the cervical spine — are one of the most common patterns we treat.

Many patients come to us after years of managing headaches with medication, not realizing that the root cause may be in their neck.
